One in a Million

On the one hand, an idolised social media star in the USA; on the other, a huge fan in Germany: this sensitive coming-of-age film captures the growth of two girls thousands of kilometres apart and allows us to share in their lives. 

At the beginning of the film, Whitney is celebrating the incredible number of one million followers on her YouTube channel in the USA. From an early age, her parents decide to regularly publish videos of their daughter and her sport. At some point, these clips are indispensable for financing her competitive gymnastics. One of her biggest fans is Yara from Germany. She has her own social media account and edits photos of her idol to create an imaginary twin. ONE IN A MILLION follows the two girls – connected only by social media and their love of the sport – in parallel and independently, weaving their stories into an overall narrative. 
With great sensitivity, Joya Thome tells the story of growing up in and with a digital world. At the beginning still children, both girls develop into teenagers in the course of the film, searching for their own identity and place in life.
